It’s a WinWin, Grou.ps launches referral program for Ning exiles

Hoping to cash in further on Ning’s shuttering of its free version, competitor Grou.ps is upping the ante with the launch of “WinWin”, a referral program directly targeting so-called Ning exiles. The service claims to have already migrated more than 50,000 Ning networks, making it the largest “do-it-yourself social networking platform”, and hopes to continue this trend by rewarding new converts and those who encourage others to follow suit. Specifically, Grou.ps will be dishing out credits which can be converted into a host of premium features such as extra bandwidth.

When we first profiled Map My Tracks , a web service which provides real-time GPS tracking for cyclists, runners and other sporting types, we liked the concept and user experience but were critical of the subscription model employed. That was back in February 2008 and since then the service, developed by UK-based digital agency Tinderhouse , has ditched premium for a combination of free for unlimited live tracking and a one-off fee for its iPhone app.

Listiki offers a smart way of gathering public opinion through crowdsourced lists

Listiki (a portmanteau of the words “list” and “wiki”) lets you crowdsource lists of, well, anything. This could be something as trivial as a list of the ‘top ten horror movies’ or something more self-serving like, I don’t know, ’5 must-read tech bloggers’

How publishers are trying to kill off publicly-owned tech media outlets

It’s a trend that is highly unlikely to happen in the US due to its ubiquitous privatization of, well, everything. However in good old Europe, where control of the media is often under the hood of governmental institutions such as the BBC in the UK, or ARD in Germany, on the one hand, and in the hands of private media companies on the other, problems can arise. More recently this has happened to a highly respected and, in German speaking countries, well known property called “ Futurezone “, which is operated by the Austrian Broadcasting cooperation (ORF) – an institution comparable to the BBC.

AudioBox.fm , the cloud-based music service that lets users upload their music collection and access it anywhere, has added the iPhone/iPod touch to its list of supported devices through a native application . Previously, iPhone users could only access AudioBox via Mobile Safari, a bit of a kludge since the QuickTime Player plugin effectively takes over the phone’s browser.

iPhone 4 pre-orders now shipping

Apple iPhone 4 shipment notifications are now being sent out to those who managed to get their pre-orders in last Tuesday. (Those that were previously prepared for shipment and not randomly canceled we gather…) They say for delivery June 23, though from past experience we’re betting Apple puts a hold on them until launch day, June 24. Did you get your shipping notice

Some iPhone 4 orders prepared to ship, others getting cancelled?

Good news and bad news time — readers are letting us know they’re starting to get their “prepared for shipment” notifications from Apple, but others are getting order cancelations. You can see the prepared for shipment notice up top. The cancelation is after the break and appears linked to a failure to authorize.

Happy birthday iPhone 3GS

A year ago today many of us were standing in line outside our local Apple Store waiting to get our geeky little hands on the iPhone 3GS , then king of the mobile space. Twice the speed, video recording, and VoiceControl were the killer features, even if the form factor was unchanged. Over the last twelve months, iPhone 3GS has served us well, and at its soon-to-be $99 price point, rocking iOS 4 , no doubt it will serve many budget smartphone shoppers well for another year to come.
