Facebook Passes Google in US Traffic

Chart courtesy of DigitalBeat and Hitwise US It was bound to happen and many predicted this year would be the one where we see social media – especially Facebook take away the most popular site crown from Google. The social networking site did beat out Google by a miniscule percentage – 7.07% to 7.03% in the US according to Hitwise. It is worth pointing out that social gaming seems to be the reason for the rapid rise of Facebook traffic

The two great industries of Bombay

A few years ago, when Percy Mistry’s committee was working on the MIFC report, I used to joke that of the two great industries in Bombay, movies will make it first to international customers. A few days ago in the New York Times , Anupama Chopra has a story showing that some action on that front is now visible. Winning on a global scale in finance and in movies has some common features : it involves raw materials like human capital, top end computer technology, freedom of speech, openness to other cultures, a large home market, the natural opportunities of connecting up with the disapora, and Schumpeterian creative destruction

Apple iPhone Developer Agreement Made Public

Dear developers, you have no power, no recourse beyond $50 and are at our complete mercy. NASA has an iPhone app and the mere fact that this government agency chose to develop one means that the EFF was able to use the Freedom of Information Act to obtain the Apple iPhone developer agreement – the closely guarded document which gives Apple the power to pull applications at will and be the final arbiter of what apps make it into the iTunes App Store.

WiMAX: Emerging Markets vs. Developed Markets

Although WiMAX has universal appeal, as it creates ubiquitous broadband connectivity, the key drivers for the deploying WiMAX in emerging and developed markets differ. Over the last few years, WiMAX has gained a strong foothold in developing markets, where there is a latent demand for broadband, but poor infrastructure

Google Apps Marketplace Brings Walled Garden to the Desktop

Years back TMC launched a magazine titled IMS which stands for IP Multimedia Subsystem – and represented an architecture model allowing carriers to open up their networks to developers who would in turn take a revenue split in exchange for allowingtheir apps to run on the carrier’s network. Customers of the service provider would be provided walled garden access to services – they would be pushed to use authorized apps.

Port Alberni Cable Landing Station Sees Traffic Again

As Neptune’s trident has struck Port Alberni this December 8th 2009 he must have remembered the day more than a century ago when the All Red Line was completed close by at the Bamfield Cable Station in October 1902. Open Street Maps Experiments Take Two…

OSM Mapped to a 3D Plane with as3Dmod Building on my first experiment with OpenStreetMaps and Away3D, I decided to cook up two more! The first one uses a block grid to display the map in 3D space. On zoom the blocks rotate 360. I used the ModestMap TweenMap, displayed in on the left, to allow control and capture the map’s bitmap data.

IPv6 or IPv4? What will we see in the first wave of LTE networks?

All the talk early this year seems to be about LTE deployment to alleviate chronic Apple and other smartphones induced indigestion on the AT&T and other major Mobile Networks swamped by data traffic. The telluric shift albeit the user will not care or should not notice is that when he or she will power on that smartphone or whatever the communicating Swiss Knife will be called, it will request an IP address to complete an IP based call. A device without an IP address will be rather difficult to reach and the ungodly NATword should not even be whispered

February’s Landing Page Experiment: Roaming

Why Collaboration Matters in an IP Transition

Carriers are examining different strategies to staff to meet the needs of an IP transition. Some carriers will be able to leverage existing in-house expertise at the data layer, while others will look outside the organization to hire a few key players to lead the transition. Some carriers will turn toward third-party providers for access to transition expertise.

Patent Pooling Taking Off

I suggested companies join the RPX patent protection club back in 2008 as I have seen how patent litigation can destroy a company’s profitability and force it to lose focus. RPX as you may remember is a firm whose goal is to allow companies to buy into a pool of patents which can be used to protect them against future lawsuits. The idea is a company will think twice about pursuing a patent lawsuit if you can countersue using a huge pool of patents.

Is Wow Mobile Doomed Already?

Peter Radizeski of RAD-INFO thinks Wow Mobile is doomed. To be fair, Peter is cynical but then again, he is right most of the time. In this case he thinks a MLM, get-rich scheme which sells mobile service has no chance — especially when you consider the history of MVNO failure in the US

Breaking: Goldman Sachs Bonuses all Stock?

I just heard from a reliable source that Goldman Sachs bonuses have been switched from cash to stock. Recently the company announced this would be the case for those at the top of the organization but now my source tells me this will be the case for the whole company. With the massive government and public backlash against banks and the amount of their compensation, this seems like a very very smart move for Goldman.
