New Internet Explorer 0-day Vulnerability and Targeted Attacks

News of targeted attacks on Google , Adobe , and other large companies were made public last week. The initial assumption was that the attacks were done with malicious PDF files but on Thursday Microsoft released information that the attacks were done with a new security vulnerability in Internet Explorer. This is interesting as the majority of targeted attacks are using email attachments sent to one or a few recipients at a target organization

New Year Same Old Trend – Phone Card Sales Declining

Well we are now into the new year and I started to reflect on the past year and the year ahead. For the most part 2009 saw a substantial decline in overall phone card sales and I’m afraid we will continue to see the same trend throughout 2010. Prepaid Mobile phones with competitive international rates are only going to get more aggressive this year and with increased penetration of broadband in recent immigrant households, VOIP services like Skype and Vonage will also continue to errode the phone card market share

Firefox 3.6 due this month; next comes ‘Lorentz’

Mozilla hopes to release the final version of Firefox 3.6 later this month and a stability-improving update code-named Lorentz by March as part of a revised updating strategy. Mike Beltzner, Mozilla’s director of Firefox, said Tuesday that he’s pleased so far with his scrutiny of test data from the more than 1 million people using the first release candidate of Firefox 3.6 , which came out late last week. “So far we haven’t found showstoppers,” he said.

McAfee in deal to power Facebook security ops

In a move to show its 350 million members that it’s serious about their safety, Facebook has launched a partnership with security firm McAfee: six months of McAfee’s Internet Security Suite software, a discount subscription after that, and custom security software and education materials on Facebook. “Facebook is applying all financial incentives from this partnership to the benefit of its users and will not be taking a share of any revenue from user subscriptions,” a release explained.

Firefox gets a visit from the future

Thanks to a teenage Firefox aficionado from Tasmania, Australia, you can make your Firefox 3.5 or 3.6 look like mock-ups we’ve seen for Firefox 3.7 and Firefox 4.0. Tabs on top, ‘faviconized’ tabs, a new progress meter (in green), a stop-or-refresh button at the end of the URL bar, and a more Windows 7-friendly look are all part of the Strata40 theme

Fixes in for Windows 2000, Adobe Reader

Microsoft patched a critical hole in Windows 2000 on Tuesday that could allow an attacker to take control of a computer if a user viewed a maliciously crafted Embedded OpenType font in Internet Explorer, Office PowerPoint, or Word. The security bulletin is rated “low” severity for Windows 7, Vista, XP, Server 2003, and Server 2008 operating systems, according to the Microsoft advisory , which gave credit for discovering the vulnerability to a Google researcher. According to Microsoft’s Exploitability Index, the hole is rated “2″ which means “inconsistent exploit code likely” while “exploitation of systems running Windows XP and later operating systems is unlikely.” More technical details are available on Microsoft’s Security Research and Defense blog

Google’s Energy Ambitions and Smart Grid Implications

As I research Google’s move into energy, I become fascinated by the idea that Google’s influence on our lives may just be beginning. Sure the Google Toilet ( video ) may not be a real product but analysis of Google’s potential in the smart grid market, coupled with the company’s Android operating system leads at least one analyst, Jon Arnold to see a bright future of collaboration between smart devices in the home and the electrical grid

Fast fixes for two common copy-and-paste failures

Like many people who work for a company that’s located hundreds of miles from their home, I rely on remote-access programs, specifically the Remote Desktop Connection utility built into Windows. I recently encountered a relatively common bug in the program: in the midst of a remote session, I lost the ability to copy and paste

Q+A: What’s Driving China’s Latest Web Crackdown

SHANGHAI (Reuters) – China’s recent moves to tighten control of its online and mobile content industries have brought some uncertainty into the market but may not have a major immediate impact on the sector’s biggest players. Analysts say the crackdown, which appears to be aimed at pornography and other controversial content, could however stunt the sector’s prospects in the long-term.

International Student Essentials for 2010

With the new year now upon us, 2010 already looks to be another big year for international education. As we reported in our Financial Aid Blog, 2009 saw record numbers in the USA for international students with a large 8% increase in the numbers from the previous year. With the worldwide recession and the recent tightening of air security some think that students could be discouraged from studying abroad – but we at InternationalStudent.com believe strongly that, with ongoing government initiatives, the support of the international education community and a little push from us, the overall numbers will continue to grow! The financial scenario for international students has changed over the past two years, mainly due to the recession which has had a large impact on the availability of financial aid and international student loans

Be The Change

(Note: This post is a departure from the regularly-scheduled content of this blog.) Here’s the present we got ourselves this year. It’s not quite active yet, as we’re waiting on the county to inspect it (hopefully next week), Xcel Energy to come out and switch out our meter with a net meter, and then Standard Renewable Energy can come out and flip the switch. With the rebate offered by our utility , and the Federal Tax Credit , SRE predicts we’ll break even in about three years.

Wondering About Ads

So I’ve been thinking a little bit about experimenting with ads on the blog. I’ve been approached quite a few times over the last couple of years with offers to advertise and have always said no (for all the obvious reasons). The reason I’m thinking about it now is not to make money but rather just to see how it all works

Thank You

Well, this is an awkward post to write, but it would also feel ungrateful if I didn’t write it, so here goes. Thank you to Edublogs (and Sue Waters ) for all the work that went into the awards, Elluminate (and Steve Hargadon ) for hosting the awards ceremony, and the folks that nominated and voted for this blog for the Edublog Lifetime Achievement Award . It seems a little strange to get a “lifetime” achievement award for a blog I’ve been writing for just over four years and that started simply as a way to continue the conversations in the staff development efforts in my school

Rondee inquiries

1)      I added an email address after I scheduled my Rondee but there was no “send” button. How do I know my guest was invited?   * There is a button in the lower right-hand corner that says “update”.  You’ll want to make sure to click this button in order to have the new invitation sent out.  If you are still not sure if that worked, that refresh and look at the invitation page and see if the new person you invite to the conference call appears there (in the “not replied” section).

Which Campaign is More Effective?

Both LG and MTV have current campaigns centered around CyberSafety/Bullying/Sexting/Ethics. Alec Couros tweeted about the LG Give It A Ponder Campaign which stars James Lipton from Inside the Actors Studio fame. Here’s one of the videos: I like the spots, but tweeted back that I wondered if this campaign would be effective with the target audience – presumably pre-teens, teenagers and young adults.
