Nor’easters Remind us why the PSTN is Useful
Having been one of the early evangelists of VoIP and launching the first magazine in the space – Internet Telephony and longest-running conference , etc – I think I need to take a moment and point out that one of the challenges of consumer VoIP is the need for external power. This past weekend, the northeast just endured a nor’easter where I saw massive trees buckle like dandelion stalks in the hurricane-force winds

Voxeo’s Dan York shows Skype released the source code to its SILK super wideband audio codec to the ” CODEC Working Group ” of the Internet Engineering Task Force , one the Internet’s standards bodies. SILK is one of the things that make Skype calls sound so rich and vivid. And now SILK is available for everyone.

Skype hit a new high watermark for user activity today: 23 million people logged in to the Skype network at the same time. Skype should reach 26 million concurrent by the end of the year, barring any major improvements in distribution or marketing. Dialtone is the most useful measure we have of Skype’s capacity.

What Are Your Best Pre-Algebra Websites?
My Math Department is building a website with resources to help incoming (and existing) freshmen with some of the math skills that will help them be successful in high school mathematics. At this time, they are focusing on three areas: Fractions (adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing) Integers (adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing) Order of Operations We would really appreciate it if you would share websites (either explanatory or skills practice, or both) that you think are helpful for students in these areas. If you have a website you think would be really helpful that doesn’t fall into one of these areas, feel free to add that as well, as they hope to expand on this site in the future

Still Only 50 Calls/Day for Subscriptions?
Hi guys- Does anyone know if Skype still only allows 50 calls per day when dialing with a country subscription? The reason I’m asking is that I’ve tried using Skype with predictive dialing (small call center), and basically could only use the subscription for half a shift before Skype started deducting from our business control panel balance.

Patent Pooling Taking Off
I suggested companies join the RPX patent protection club back in 2008 as I have seen how patent litigation can destroy a company’s profitability and force it to lose focus. RPX as you may remember is a firm whose goal is to allow companies to buy into a pool of patents which can be used to protect them against future lawsuits. The idea is a company will think twice about pursuing a patent lawsuit if you can countersue using a huge pool of patents.

Icons for a data portability policy – a few thoughts
I sat down with the DataPortability Project ‘s Elias Bizannes a few months ago to organize the elements of a model portability policy . Your site’s portability policy will be part of your Terms of Service or End User License Agreement. Your portability policy should help your sites and services communicate the data portability parts of your relationship with the people who use them and your business partners

Is Wow Mobile Doomed Already?
Peter Radizeski of RAD-INFO thinks Wow Mobile is doomed. To be fair, Peter is cynical but then again, he is right most of the time. In this case he thinks a MLM, get-rich scheme which sells mobile service has no chance — especially when you consider the history of MVNO failure in the US
