Still Only 50 Calls/Day for Subscriptions?
Hi guys- Does anyone know if Skype still only allows 50 calls per day when dialing with a country subscription? The reason I’m asking is that I’ve tried using Skype with predictive dialing (small call center), and basically could only use the subscription for half a shift before Skype started deducting from our business control panel balance.

AVG Free 9 gives free ID protection
We reviewed the latest version of AVG Free back in October 2009 , and found it to be a decent successor to the previous version, 8.5. AVG Free 9 is currently the most popular app on Download.com by a long shot , and this version bolsters its security offerings with the integrated LinkScanner and free identity protection for users in the United States.

Patent Pooling Taking Off
I suggested companies join the RPX patent protection club back in 2008 as I have seen how patent litigation can destroy a company’s profitability and force it to lose focus. RPX as you may remember is a firm whose goal is to allow companies to buy into a pool of patents which can be used to protect them against future lawsuits. The idea is a company will think twice about pursuing a patent lawsuit if you can countersue using a huge pool of patents.

Avoiding Roaming Costs as an International Student
We all love our mobile phones, they provide such a high level of convenience that most people do not want to go without them. However, although you may travel well, its most likely that your existing mobile phone provider and contract in your home country will not travel well with you.

Greasemonkey comes to Chrome
Greasemonkey scripts are an easy way to create single-serving enhancements for Firefox, and now they work natively on Google Chrome, too. Google Chrome 4 and above now natively supports many Greasemonkey scripts. (Credit: Screenshot by Seth Rosenblatt/CNET) In a blog post Monday , Aaron Boodman, the developer of the Greasemonkey add-on for Firefox, announced that Chrome version 4 and later will support most of the JavaScript-coded Greasemonkey scripts without any additional tweaking necessary

In their words: Experts weigh in on Mac vs. PC security
When I am asked the question “Which is more secure, Mac or PC?” I find myself stumbling around for a response because I don’t have a clear-cut answer. I use both. And I use antivirus software with both

Discussing Little Brother with Cory Doctorow
Anne Smith and Maura Moritz ’s ninth graders are currently finishing up reading Cory Doctorow ’s Little Brother . Previously they read 1984 and their task is to look at both books and answer the questions: What have we learned – or what have we not learned – over the past 60 years [from Orwell's time to the present]? What does our future hold for us?

iPad About
iPad About Well bless my soul and whiskers. This is the first time I’ve joined the congregation at the Church of Apple for a new product launch. I’ve watched all the past ones, downloaded the Quicktime movies and marvelled as Apple’s leader has stood before an ovating faithful and announced the switch to Intel, the birth of iPod, the miniMac, the iTunes Store, OS X, iPhoto, the swan’s neck iMac, the Shuffle, Apple retail stores, the iPhone, the titanium powerbook, Garageband, the App Store and so much more.

Icons for a data portability policy – a few thoughts
I sat down with the DataPortability Project ’s Elias Bizannes a few months ago to organize the elements of a model portability policy . Your site’s portability policy will be part of your Terms of Service or End User License Agreement. Your portability policy should help your sites and services communicate the data portability parts of your relationship with the people who use them and your business partners

Is Wow Mobile Doomed Already?
Peter Radizeski of RAD-INFO thinks Wow Mobile is doomed. To be fair, Peter is cynical but then again, he is right most of the time. In this case he thinks a MLM, get-rich scheme which sells mobile service has no chance — especially when you consider the history of MVNO failure in the US

Asterisk Gets a Song
Before checking out this post be sure to put on your propeller hat — Oh and by the way turn down the sound if you ever want a chance at getting a date this decade. GM Voices is a long-standing company recording voice prompts for companies. They are one of the most consistent companies I know in the telecom space — exhibiting at shows for about 15-20 years

Don’t update via email!
Not to be confused with our alert last Thursday , spammers seem ready to pounce on the press attention towards the recent out-of-band release of MS10-002 to scare users into downloading fake updates via email. We have been seeing messages pushing a Microsoft update via a link. The messages spoof the From: address which shows as Microsoft Office, and in an effort to further legitimize these messages and broaden their attack targets, the messages also contain Italian and French translations.

Skype gave away $12.9 billion in free international calls in 2009
One in nine cross-border minutes was a free Skype-to-Skype call last year. That’s $12.9 billion in international calls Skype gave its users for free assuming Skype’s customers would pay a world average market price of roughly $0.24 per minute.

The Best (?) of The Fischbowl 2009
As I have the previous three years ( 2008 , 2007 , 2006 ), this is the post where I try to pull together some of the most interesting blog posts from my blog in 2009. These are not necessarily fantastic posts, but should give readers that are new to the blog a place to start to get a feel for what this blog is all about.

2010 AHS Faculty Dance Video
As I’ve said several times before , we take a break from the regularly scheduled content of this blog to bring you the 2010 AHS Faculty Dance (performed at our Winter Pep Assembly). It might not show up in AYP, or help us get Race to the Top dollars, but I think this is still a huge part of what a learning community should look like.

Update on the Microsoft Internet Explorer 0-day
We are monitoring the situation on the new Internet Explorer 0-day vulnerability that we blogged about yesterday. Our ThreatSeeker(TM) network has identified two more malicious URLs that are used in live attacks, this time hxxp://201002.[REMOVED]:2988/log/ie.html and hxxp://m.[REMOVED].net:81/m/index.html . According to reports from our friends at Ahnlab, the second URL was spread through the Instant Messenger network Misslee Messenger, a popular IM client in South Korea.

New Internet Explorer 0-day Vulnerability and Targeted Attacks
News of targeted attacks on Google , Adobe , and other large companies were made public last week. The initial assumption was that the attacks were done with malicious PDF files but on Thursday Microsoft released information that the attacks were done with a new security vulnerability in Internet Explorer. This is interesting as the majority of targeted attacks are using email attachments sent to one or a few recipients at a target organization

New Year Same Old Trend – Phone Card Sales Declining
Well we are now into the new year and I started to reflect on the past year and the year ahead. For the most part 2009 saw a substantial decline in overall phone card sales and I’m afraid we will continue to see the same trend throughout 2010. Prepaid Mobile phones with competitive international rates are only going to get more aggressive this year and with increased penetration of broadband in recent immigrant households, VOIP services like Skype and Vonage will also continue to errode the phone card market share
