The MNO Priority List

Like every other player within the voice industry, mobile operators know that they will eventually need to transition to an all-IP solution to gain the same benefits that other players are seeking, such as cost savings, more efficient architectures, and more flexible networks. However, mobile operators have a different relative priority list that is driving their transition to IP. Because mobile services still command a premium, particularly for international calling and roaming, cost efficiencies aren’t as urgent a driver as for traditional carriers, who have seen their margins eroded through intense competitive pressures

Colombia’s Coffee Triangle: Pereira, Manizales and Armenia

To the average consumer, coffee can be found in aisle 3 at the local supermarket. Some know it grows on some sort of tree, and most people need it to help start their day. But if you ever feel the urge to know the origin of your morning cup of Joe, a visit to The Coffee Triangle of Colombia is much more fun and informative than reading a Wikipedia page

New Zealand’s North Island: Top Three Escapades

Picture the world’s longest and lumpiest golf course, 1200 miles long, green humps stretching to the horizon. Presto, you’ve conjured New Zealand, the same size as Colorado but stretched like taffy until sundered in the middle, floating on an azure sea. The genius of Kiwi engineers has created highways that faithfully mimic the intricate nip, tuck and jot of each and every drunken stream and spastic hill, making any road trip a notable escapade, if you have a Porsche

Sao Miguel and Santa Maria, Azores: Volcanic Islands of the Atlantic

I love it when a place surprises you, and you don’t have any pre-conceived ideas about what it will be like. It’s like going to a movie and never hearing any reviews or knowing even what the film will be about. That’s been our most excellent feeling about these nine islands located about two-thirds of the way to Europe

Unchanging hexagrams and patterns of change

(Note: this is a quick post, throwing an idea out into the ether as soon as it hatches, with just a few feathers sticking to its scrawny neck, and a great big gaping beak squawking ‘Feed me!’ It is distinctly lacking in flight-feathers of its own as yet.) People instinctively feel that there must be some distinct, special meaning in receiving an unchanging hexagram.

The Festival of the Sahara: Galloping Stallions, Camel Wrestling and Rabbit Chases

Every December, two dusty towns in the inhospitable southern region of Tunisia, far from the Mediterranean Sea or the rainy hills of the northwest, share festivals dedicated to oasis life. Tozeur and Douz, about 65 miles apart, schedule festivals back-to-back to honor their ancient history of nomadic life, camel caravans and traditional music. Today I’m in Douz among a crowd of 10,000 spectators camouflaging themselves from the sun with celebratory little red flags.

Running with Gazelles in Morocco

When middle-aged crazy first hit, I went alone to run with the bulls in Spain. Three years later, with hot flashes of wanderlust still surging in me, I found myself in Morocco running with gazelles. Morocco is a magic country that for years existed for me mostly in my imagination — an ethereal territory tethered to sandy desert tents propped up under a sheltering sky, dreams huddled together like Bedouins around an oasis under a starry blanket, a place packed with possibility retaining secrets the way camels store water in their humps

The Island of Vis, Croatia: Back from Obscurity

This time nothing but a Land Rover would do to explore the interior of Vis, an island off the Dalmatian Coast. Kept off limits to the world by the military under former Yugoslavian dictator Josip Tito, its lack of commercial development has kept it in a fairly pristine condition. But that is about to change.
