Trains Begin Creating “No Phone Zones”

When mobile phones first started being used regularly, many people were concerned about the rudeness that came along with them. It took some time to get used to hearing people talk on their own phones all around us in public spaces but the most part, we’ve adjusted. We conduct our business by phone in all types of public spaces including on public transport

BlackBerry App World Reaches 10,000 Apps

When Apple boast about 250,000 applications being available for download from the App Store, and Google report figures of 80,000 for the Android Market, RIM announcing that the BlackBerry App World has recently passed the 10,000 app milestone makes it look like a small fish in a big pond. However, it’s quality not quantity that counts and we’re all guilty of being blinded by these figures, as this achievement should not go unrecognised. RIM opened the doors to the App World in April 2009 with less than a thousand apps inside, plus a restriction on the countries that could have access to it. App World 2.0 came along a year later, but didn’t reach UK shores until late August, bringing with it QR code scanning, new payment options and the addition of app charts.

Yendo You Remember Me?

Remember the Sony Ericsson Yendo? Perhaps not, but let us reacquaint you. The Yendo was announced back in the middle of June along with the Cedar and on the back of the X8’s debut . Previously seen under the ever-so-sweet codename of TeaCake, this was the return of the Walkman phone, and the first of which to wear a full touchscreen. Well, the W150i Yendo is just about ready for sale, with a Spanish retailer listing it as costing €169, or about £140. The Yendo has also been approved for sale in the USA, where it will be known as the Yizo. Nice. Anyway, the Yizo will share the same features as the Yendo, and here is a reminder of what they are: 2.6″ touchscreen.

Nokia insiders burst that bubble earlier though and revealed that this is not the case to a Swedish website claiming that the N9 has been delayed and Symbian^3 will be the hottest topic on this year’s agenda.

HTC HD7 to be Announced at HTC Event Next Week?

Earlier this week, we reported that HTC’s rumoured Windows Phone 7 device, the HD3 appeared as the HTC HD7 in an O2 document. It was an assumption mainly based on the release date that was printed with it, which was smack bang in the middle of October, when the highly anticipated Microsoft OS is due to hit UK shores

First Look at MeeGo – Screenshots of Nokia and Intel’s OS Appear

It was back in February when we first heard that Nokia’s Maemo platform and Intel’s Moblin OS were merging to create what Nokia CEO, Olli Pekka-Kallasvuo described as a “new era of mobile computing.” MeeGo, an open Linux based platform was born, with the companies planning to combine the best of two rather niche platforms to take on the likes of Android and iOS. Nokia and Intel also hoped that MeeGo would be open in every way in order to appeal to as many users as possible and be available on a range of different handsets.

Could Smudges on Touchscreen Phones Give Away User Passwords?

The greasy fingerprints and oily residues left on your touchscreen devices are unpleasant to look at, but it turns out this is not the only flaw – they also pose potential security threats to users as they can be used to infer our passwords, according to researchers. In a recently published report, researchers at the University of Pennsylvania revealed how partial or complete password patterns can be retrieved by lifting and studying the smudge marks on screens. These smudges, or oily residues, left behind by fingers on smartphones and other touchscreen devices, are surprising persistent in time and difficult to remove even through wiping.

Samsung Cetus Leaked as Windows Phone 7 Device

Following the earlier news that Windows Phone 7 could be launching in Europe in October and the USA in November, we’ve been treated to a leak of a new Samsung phone running the Microsoft operating system. Named the Cetus, it appeared on the Bluetooth Special Interest Group website, albeit briefly. However, the moments that it did hang around was enough for the specification to be noted, so here is the proposed feature list for one of the first Samsing phones to use Windows Phone 7: A 4″, 800

Europe to See Windows Phone 7 First?

It has been a long wait to hear exactly when Microsoft will bring Windows Phone 7 to market and although we still don’t have an exact date, this is closer than we’ve been yet to that elusive day and date. Microsoft’s Chief Operating Officer Kevin Turner, who took to the stage at the Worldwide Partner Conference a short while ago, addressed Microsoft’s future in the smartphone arena, saying: October likely across Europe and November likely across US, we’re back in this game! Who would have expected Europe to be the first to see Windows Phone 7 in the shops?  Very few people we would imagine, as most would have laid money on a day/date launch across several countries at the same time

More Nokia C7 Rumours, Official Confirmation Soon?

It was at the beginning of June that the Nokia C7 was leaked, with its one blurry picture accompanied by a small helping of spec details; a list that was then expanded on at the end of the month. The following silence has now been broken by a tech magazine from Hong Kong, whose article on the forthcoming C7-00 has confirmed the rumoured specification and provided another image. So what can we expect from the C7? It is going to be another Symbian^3 phone, making it the second after the Nokia N8, and it will have an 8 megapixel camera with a dual-LED flash and 720p video shooting too. The screen will measure 3.3″, is capacitive touch and has a resolution of 640

Samsung Galaxy Apollo – Houston, We Don’t Have a Problem

The Galaxy Apollo had a bit of a strange start to life as it made its first appearance next to the Samsung Wave and Galaxy S on Samsung’s smartphone website, accompanied by the words ‘coming soon’ and nothing else – no announcement, nothing. Two days later, Samsung make the Apollo official by way of a simple press release, naming the Apollo as the I5801. While it may not be quite as jaw-droppingly powerful as the Galaxy S or the bada-powered Wave, the Apollo is a good example of the type of mobile phone Samsung excel at – the mid-range, attractive and surprisingly high-spec device for everyone. Just to avoid any confusion, the I5801 Apollo is the same phone as the I5800 Galaxy 3, however the I5801 is exclusive to Orange
