Flight 3407 co-pilot sent 2 texts prior to takeoff
‘Sterile cockpit’ issue raised in crash probe. The co-pilot of the plane that crashed in Clarence Center last February used her cell phone in the cockpit to send two text messages prior to takeoff, possibly in violation of federal “sterile cockpit” rules that bar pilots from focusing on anything but the flight to which they are assigned.

The kiddie designers of 99designs
Many of you will know my stance against spec work , but it’s safe to say my opinion of the practice has fallen to an all-time low. Backing up for just a moment, here’s the sales pitch on 99designs, one of the main spec work websites: “We connect 56,816 passionate designers from around the globe with small businesses who need design projects completed. And, we do it in a timely fashion without the usual risk or cost associated with professional design.” Disregarding the fallacy of the numbers game — recently examined here by Steve Douglas — let’s focus on how such companies minimise client cost

Stealth MXP Bio: flash drive for James Bond
Although almost all modern flash drives support 128 -, and some 256-bit encryption, they do not guarantee 100% protection against hacking information. Firefox gets a visit from the future
Thanks to a teenage Firefox aficionado from Tasmania, Australia, you can make your Firefox 3.5 or 3.6 look like mock-ups we’ve seen for Firefox 3.7 and Firefox 4.0. Tabs on top, ‘faviconized’ tabs, a new progress meter (in green), a stop-or-refresh button at the end of the URL bar, and a more Windows 7-friendly look are all part of the Strata40 theme

Ghostbusters logo
My earliest memory of the cinema is being taken to see Ghostbusters with my mum, dad, and older brother, James (my little sister, Sarah, wasn’t yet on the scene). I was five or six at the time. There was a Roger the Rabbit short before the film started, and the ghosts scared me witless — I had nightmares about being chased by Slimer.

Stock trade marks from 1975
In 1975, and in response to the trends of blandness and similarity in the trademark design of the day, designer Jerry Herring, of Herring Design in Houston, produced a satirical pamphlet advertising “Stock Trade Marks.” It was reprinted in the March/April 1999 issue of Communication Arts, and with the recent happenings at iStock , now seems like a good time to remind everyone that cheap “design” is certainly nothing new. Here’s part of the May/June 1975 issue of Herring Design Quarterlies. Stock Trade Marks Dear corporation president, public relations director, or agency art buyer: Are you in need of a dynamic new image to replace the smoking smoke stacks you or your client is now using as a trade mark?
