Brazil World Cup logo 2014

“The logo’s interlinking hands in the yellow and green of Brazil and shaped like a trophy aim to enhance Brazil’s image as a warm, hospitable nation. The design is taken from an iconic photograph of three hands triumphantly raising the World Cup.” — QUOTE FROM WORLD FOOTBALL INSIDER Some have likened it to a “ facepalm .” I can see the resemblance, but personally, I’m just glad it’s an improvement on many of the previous World Cup logos . Bibliocadavers and Other Foolishness

Forward to the past

Not something you see often — the resurrection of an old logo created 30 years ago. According to Alissa Walker’s piece in Fast Company , LA’s Museum of Contemporary Art ( MOCA ) is to bring back the old logo (or a resemblance thereof) created by AIGA medalists Chermayeff & Geismar . The previous/soon to be ressurected MOCA logo The 80s design (above) is certainly a whole lot more distinctive than its successor (below), and it’ll be interesting to see what differences have been implemented when the previous iteration is relaunched

Logo Design Love: the unsung heroes

One of my biggest regrets during the Logo Design Love book project was being unable to feature every contributor. It had been necessary to set the book’s maximum page count back when the contract was signed , so it was impossible to tell just how much room there’d be for each contributor until the writing/editing was complete. As a belated “thank you” to the graphic designers who helped, but who weren’t shown in the book, here’s a sample of work readers won’t have seen

Birds of a feather flock together

Although branding a commercial airline is something I’d love to do, it’s unlikely that by working solo I’ll get the opportunity. Should it ever come to pass, however, there’s one design option I’ll be sure to rule out — the bird in a circle. Air Algerie Air Jamaica Ariana Cameroon Air Condor Iraqi Airways Japan Airlines (previous) Lloyd Aeroe Boliviano Lufthansa Designed by Otto Firle, in 1918 Modified by Otl Aicher , in 1969 Tame Airlines Tarom Romanian Air Transport Turkish Airlines Zambia Airways In fact, it’s probably wise that I steer clear of birds altogether
