Samsung Galaxy Tab and Toshiba Folio 100 handled

There’s a good video on the BBC website which takes a look at the new 7″ Samsung Galaxy Tab we covered yesterday. There’s a hands-on and a wry smile from Carey McGregor (Senior Product Manager at Samsung) when BBC reporter Rory Cellan-Jones states, “It looks lovely, but it looks just like a shrunken iPad though”. The Folio 100, from Toshiba, is also shown and comes with Android 2.2, Flash 10.1 support and a miniHDMI port

Alcatel-Lucent Outlines Next Generation Communications

Having recently purchased a Sony Dash which I still need to take out of the box, I am obviously intrigued by the idea of devices which allow widgets to run on them. Apparently Alcatel-Lucent too is enamored with the concept of widgets and mobile apps as the company just picked up OpenPlug , a company focused on cross-platform application development solutions.

For Amber Lyon, CNN

I see you’ve now gotten around to requesting an interview with me or a company spokesperson, 90 days after you ambushed our namesake and founder, Craig Newmark , following his May 20th talk on veteran’s affairs and other issues unrelated to craigslist, at a conference in Washington. You knew Craig was not in management or a company spokesperson, but setting CNN’s ethical code aside, you sidestepped company channels in favor of ambushing our semi-retired founder, complete with a misleading “set up” for your surprise questions. Now that CNN has aired your highly misleading piece dozens of times, mischaracterizing your stunt as a serious interview on this subject, and you’ve updated your “bio” to showcase this rare jewel of investigative journalism, you’re ready to try actually interviewing the company itself on this subject.

How do I install Google Voice and Video Plug-In in Gmail?

I’m a Gmail fan and just learned that Google is going to implement “dial out” capability from right within Gmail [ed: see Call phones from Gmail on the Gmail blog]. Darn cool, but they said you need to install “Google Voice and Video Plug-In” and I’m hoping you can explain how to do just that?

Could Smudges on Touchscreen Phones Give Away User Passwords?

The greasy fingerprints and oily residues left on your touchscreen devices are unpleasant to look at, but it turns out this is not the only flaw – they also pose potential security threats to users as they can be used to infer our passwords, according to researchers. In a recently published report, researchers at the University of Pennsylvania revealed how partial or complete password patterns can be retrieved by lifting and studying the smudge marks on screens. These smudges, or oily residues, left behind by fingers on smartphones and other touchscreen devices, are surprising persistent in time and difficult to remove even through wiping.

Transparent Algebra: First Week

So my Algebra blogging has been taking up what little “extra” blogging time I have, but here’s the summary of the first week of Algebra: I’m rusty. So far I’ve over-planned (or underestimated the amount of time things take, depending on your perspective) every day. I guess the good news is that I don’t think I’ve done any irreparable harm to my students

SEBI nay change Retail Investor’s Definition

Image via Wikipedia The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) is planning to enhance the maximum investment limit for retail individual investors in public issues from Rs 1,00,000 to Rs 2,00,000. In a discussion paper floated by the market regulator, SEBI has argued that “retail individual investors, who have the capacity and appetite to apply for securities worth above Rs 1,00,000 were constrained from doing so because of the Rs 1,00,000 limit.” The discussion paper also contends that since 35 per cent of the public issue is to be allocated to retail investors, in case of large public issues – with issue size in the range of Rs 4,000-6,000 crore — the limit of Rs 1,00,000 would mean that the issue has to receive a minimum of 1,50,000 to 2,00,000 applications from retail category. “This could be a daunting task considering that in case of well oversubscribed issues, the number of applications received from Retail Individual.

“Family Friendly” eBay classifieds

An interesting Facebook page recently came to our attention, dedicated to the proposition that one can literally “stop human trafficking” by using eBay’s “family friendly” classifieds instead of craigslist . eBay touts the advanced filtering technologies eBay employs to “make sure all of our categories and content are family-friendly,” technologies it no doubt applies to the “broader eBay Classifieds family including Gumtree, Marktplaats, Mobile.de and Loquo, which extends the reach of eBay Classifieds to more than 20 countries.” As a practical example of eBay’s “advanced filtering” and “family friendly” classifieds, we’ve been shown some ads currently live on eBay’s Loquo.com classifieds site, which features thousands of paid ads offering various sexual acts in exchange for money (NSFW).
