International Student Essentials for 2010
With the new year now upon us, 2010 already looks to be another big year for international education. As we reported in our Financial Aid Blog, 2009 saw record numbers in the USA for international students with a large 8% increase in the numbers from the previous year. With the worldwide recession and the recent tightening of air security some think that students could be discouraged from studying abroad – but we at InternationalStudent.com believe strongly that, with ongoing government initiatives, the support of the international education community and a little push from us, the overall numbers will continue to grow! The financial scenario for international students has changed over the past two years, mainly due to the recession which has had a large impact on the availability of financial aid and international student loans

Six rules for building good universities
In recent years, an empirical literature has begun to prise apart the management process of universities, seeking to identify the features which cater to excellence. In a previous blog post I summarised five useful ingredients that enable successful universities, from a working paper by Philippe Aghion, Mathias Dewatripont, Caroline M. Hoxby, Andreu Mas-Colell and Andre Sapir: No government approval required for budget; budget-making happens at the university and university alone.

Our proposal to build and operate a white spaces database
Posted by Richard Whitt, Washington Telecom and Media Counsel It’s been a while since we’ve talked about what’s happening with white spaces being freed up for wireless broadband, but today we took another step towards making ” Wi-Fi on steroids ” a reality for consumers. In a submission to the FCC , we’re asking the Commission to designate Google as one of potentially several administrators of a white spaces geolocation database.

Another great video created, filmed, directed and produced by Jeffrey Sass of sassholes and founder / curator of Invitations, the premiere spot for those needing to experience Social Media Rehab . 20 Mbps Broadband From MTNL , Too Good To Be True
High Speed Internet Connectivity in India might as well be called an Oxymoron.Despite the larger than life claims from the Service providers, the broadband speeds have been rather sub standard or even if they deliver on the speed , the uptime and the pricing negate the effect. We keep pondering over why E-Commerce has not taken off in India , and one basic answer lies in the below par connectivity. The service providers are upbeat about their plans and they market their seemingly Fastest Broadband connections like there’s no tomorrow.Risking generalization, i think its safe to assume that most of us have complains from our Internet Service Provider.

Styluses for iPhone, iPod touch and Other Finger-touch Screens
The finger-touch capability of capacitive touchscreen smartphones like iPhone , Motorola DROID and BlackBerry Storm 2 is a fun and attractive feature. Still, it may cause inconvenience sometimes: You want to wear gloves in winter or make artificial nails but then the screen won’t be able to sense your fingertip; or your finger is too big that you often press the wrong place. Want to get rid of all these troubles

Boomers Increase Presence on Facebook, In Blogosphere
In some recent discussions I have had, I have noticed an opinion–mainly amongst non-bloggers and non-Facebookers–that these digital realms are dominated by young people. While this is not a total misconception, it is also not entirely true. Take a look at Facebook’s user statistics from the past year or so, and you’ll see that while the largest percentage of the participants are younger than Boomers, users over 45 are steadily making up a larger percentage of their overall users.

Telecom Tuesday: 3G Auctions, Advertisments,Mobile Banking
3G Auction Delayed,Yet Again The Indian Government seems to have lost it way with the much awaited 3G auctions. If the Department of Telecom(DoT) is to beleived , the official 3g auctions might get delayed by a more than a month and start around the first week of March.DoT is yet to finalise the Notice Inviting Applications. The 3G hype has been doing the rounds for quite sometime but it got delayed on a regular basis.India despite being one of the largest growing telecom network, is still waiting in wings to have access to the 3G network.More than that, the spectrum being offered is one of the lowest too. The government has estimated to generate over Rs 25,000 crore (Rs 250 billion) from the sale of 3G spectrum.

U.S. to help India predict monsoons with greater certainity
It might sound hard to digest but the United States has agreed to help India predict and track the monsoons better by providing imagery from its satellites. The advanced satellite images will help India track the monsoon changes with a greater degree of certainty. The US has agreed to provide India with imagery from its satellites on weather patterns over the Indian Ocean and the subcontinent that will allow scientists to predict rainfall 15 days in advance. At present, Indian scientists can predict the monsoons only one-and-a-half days in advance. It will also supply India a supercomputer that can analyse and interpret the satellite images
