Goa ordered to remove wrecked ship from tourist beach

An Indian court on Wednesday gave the government in the resort state of Goa two months to begin removing the rusting hulk of a ship that ran aground on a popular tourist beach a decade ago. Two judges at the Goa bench of the Bombay High Court told the authorities they had until June to tow away the MV River Princess , which hit the coast of north Goa during storms in 2000. The giant iron ore carrier, grounded just off Calangute beach, has become a familiar sight to the tens of thousands of tourists who flock to the former Portuguese colony’s white sands every year. Local people frustrated by previous failed attempts to remove the ship filed a petition to the court demanding its removal, expressing concern about potential damage to the coastline, marine life and tourism

First Look at MeeGo – Screenshots of Nokia and Intel’s OS Appear

It was back in February when we first heard that Nokia’s Maemo platform and Intel’s Moblin OS were merging to create what Nokia CEO, Olli Pekka-Kallasvuo described as a “new era of mobile computing.” MeeGo, an open Linux based platform was born, with the companies planning to combine the best of two rather niche platforms to take on the likes of Android and iOS. Nokia and Intel also hoped that MeeGo would be open in every way in order to appeal to as many users as possible and be available on a range of different handsets.

The BlackBerry Style 9760, previously known as the BlackBerry Oxford, has been spotted in a series of tutorial videos for RIM’s latest software OS6. Biennophone radio from 1953, now with MP3

I have an old vintage tube radio and have thought about putting modern electronics in it, too. This one has some cool features, like it actually plays the MP3 and modern AM and FM tuners through the original AM tube radio, using the last two channels 340 and 307 KHz, so you get that crap…

Self-assembling photovoltaic technology can keep repairing itself

Self-assembling photovoltaic technology can keep repairing itself @ KurzweilAI … MIT scientists have created a novel set of self-assembling molecules that can turn sunlight into electricity; the molecules can be repeatedly broken down and then reassembled quickly, just by adding or removing an additional solution. In an attempt to imitate the  process of photosynthesis, Michael Strano, the Charles and Hilda Roddey Associate Professor of Chemical Engineering, and his team, supported by grants from the MIT Energy Initiative, the Eni Solar Frontiers Center at MIT and the Department of Energy, produced synthetic molecules called phospholipids that form disks; these disks provide structural support for other molecules that actually respond to light, in structures called reaction centers, which release electrons when struck by particles of light

UP! 3D printer pr0n

The $1,500 closed-source UP! Personal Portable 3D Printer (PP3DP) does its thing, putting the heat on open alternatives like the Mendel and MakerBot. We have been developing the UP! printer for more than one year, it is completely based on our own efforts, we have not used open-source solutions for this design. We understand and follow the RepRap and Fab@home projects with great interest, however these designs follow a quite different direction than we have chose for the UP! printer development

Portable electronics desk

Morten Nisker tweeted this serviceable little portable electronics bench he built so that he could carry all of his electronics tools and supplies in a handy carrying case. He realized that he didn’t do that many electronics projects because it was kind of a hassle to scare everything up from far flung corners of the house.

New Firefox beta offers audio API, menu tweaks

The fifth Firefox 4 beta makes some small feature changes to the in-development browser, bringing a new audio API to the table, revamping its menu, and turning on hardware acceleration by default. Available for Windows , Mac , and Linux , Firefox 4 beta 5 continues Mozilla’s new beta release schedule, marked by more frequent releases and smaller feature revisions per update. The most visual change to the beta is the redone menu in the Windows version, which returns a lot of functionality that had been missing from the menu in previous betas

The Splinternet Grows. HTML5 to Slow it Down

The only thing we need now is an open HTML5 store which handles the billing for developers who want the widest audience possible as their creative work is monetized . In January of 2008 I used a term Splinternet to describe the growing number of areas content providers need to focus on when delivering their services. It seems according to Forrester Research I coined the term as it refers to a splintering of the traditional Internet.

IPv6 a major catalyst for billions of dollars worth of deals? The Intel announcement of their McAfee purchase for 7.7 billion seems to indicate as much when Dave DeWalt, McAfee CEO is quoted as saying during a conference call, “If we look at the transition from IPv4 to IPv6, we’re seeing an explosion of billions of devices and they all need to be secured.” Then he continues by saying, “The embedded market is a very specific and high-opportunity market for us.” His estimate is that the number of connected devices will grow from one billion to 50 billion within 10 years.

16.92 Million new Mobile Subscribers added in July – Tele-density reaches 58.17 percent

India’s Mobile subscriber growth does not stop for anything or anyone – It is kind of become mundane to report such impressive numbers month after month. Navy alerts Goa coastal residents about super sonic boom

Indian Navy has asked the coastal residents in Goa not to get worried as that they might hear large noise of super sonic boom as MiG-29K supersonic flights were practicing off the coast. Indian Navy Public Relation Officer (PRO) Cdr M C Joshi has said that the residents may hear sonic boom sounds and they need not panic as it is associated with the training of MiG-29K aircrafts, which is happening off Goa coast. The defence official said that without disturbing the resident population of Goa, MiG-29K pilots at INS Hansa will fly all flights involving supersonic profiles deep into the sea and at very high altitudes. ”There is still a possibility that sonic booms could be heard by the local population and our fishing communities from time to time,” he added.

Nokia Looking For A ‘Smart’ Revival

It is a known fact that Nokia is in troubled waters and trying hard to come out of the ditch it has dug for itself. Few years ago, Nokia was way at the top, but things changed after the introduction of the smartphone. Not to be bogged down, Nokia introduced a variety of smartphones, but lost out to the bigwigs like iPhone and Android.  It didn’t predict the trend of the market and has been lagging ever since.
