Google and Microsoft Telecom Failures: Lessons Learned

Let’s start this piece by saying it is meant to be constructive and that people who live in glass houses should never throw stones. Unlike many writers, I am also the CEO of a media company which means I get involved in lots of product launches myself – sometimes they are from my company TMC and sometimes they are with partners or even vendors in the industry who use our services to help them launch. Over the years, I have failed in some of my launches – and I feel what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger and in an effort to utilize my collective experience to help others, I figured I would write about some of the areas where Google and Microsoft have tried to change telecom and failed

Google Buys GIPS – Here’s Why

When it comes to enabling technology, Google’s new mantra is its better to be needed than liked I first met the company called Global IP Sound around 2002 at TMC’s ITEXPO and Pulvermedia’s VON expos. What differentiated the company tome at first was the company’s ability to power wireless VoIP calls over PDAs – specifically Compaq iPAQs via a low-bandwidth codec. As you can imagine, at the time, the codec needed to not only be low-bandwidth due to the slow wireless connections but also had to be super-optimized because processors in PDAs at the time were not powerful.

Internet Telephony ban – Security Related Issue or Hidden Agenda?

It struck me to write about the issue on sensitivity of the internet telephony, once while I was chatting with my NRI friend, who narrated to me as to how they had to pay heavy landline or mobile bills for international calls made to their near and dear ones situated in India. The transcript goes like this, “ I am one among millions of NRIs in gulf with medium pay, of course, and I get good salary compared to others.

OnStar Saves Woman’s Life

I am a huge fan of any paradigm-changing technology and OnStar – the GM invented service which integrates a car’s computer and a remote call center is certainly one of these achievements. The service does lots of different things like provide turn-by-turn navigation but perhaps the crowning achievement of the service is the ability to connect to the call center when the vehicle’s sensors indicate there has been a collision. A few days ago, a couple was forced into their car at gunpoint near Chicago and a thief forced them to drive to a Currency Exchange to cash a check.

LIGHTWAVE One Optical Event New to ITEXPO in LA This Fall

It is no secret that I have been hearing great things about the future of the optical market. Check out this post for optimistic interviews regarding the space with Hunter Newby of Allied Fiber and Jim Theodoras of Adva Optical Networking . Between the need for faster enterprise and consumer broadband connections and the need for more backhaul capacity to satisfy the needs of an ever-growing number of 3G and eventually 4G devices, the need for speed is real and consumers and businesses are paying for it.

3G To Be Very Expensive Sirji!

Well if you thought the auction of 3G would bring in cheap and super fast internet browsing in the years to come then you can be very disappointed. This is because the manner in which 3G auctions is played out the only person benefitting from the spectrum auction would be the government that will laugh its way to the bank. The 3G auction has reached unexpected overall numbers and bidding still continues in over 7 circles which have excessive bids.

Media Monday: Can Govt break the TRP monopoly?

It’s finally happening, after looking into the concerns of Advertisers and Broadcasters, the IBF (Indian Broadcasting Foundation) is finally on its way to establish BARC (Broadcast Audience Research Council) in an effort to break the monopoly enjoyed by TAM and aMap. Since long it has become a matter of concern for various Advertisers and Broadcasters the way TRPs rule this hot industry. The main concern is the authenticity of the data which comes from merely 10,000 odd urban homes where TAM/aMAP meters are installed.

Hootsuite Hootlet on the iPad

On a PC, I have become dependent on the Hootsuite Hootlet which allows me to rapidly post links to social networks immediately or at a preset time. It also automatically shrinks the URL making it oh so easy to post the page you are on to Facebook, Linkedin, Twitter and other social networks you like to share on. The process is pretty easy – you just create a Bookmark – any bookmark and then rename it Hootlet and paste this Javascript code as the URL

WiFi data collection: an update

Posted by Alan Eustace, Senior VP, Engineering & Research (cross-posted from the Official Google Blog ) Nine days ago the data protection authority (DPA) in Hamburg, Germany asked to audit the WiFi data that our Street View cars collect for use in location-based products like Google Maps for mobile, which enables people to find local restaurants or get directions. His request prompted us to re-examine everything we have been collecting, and during our review we discovered that a statement made in a blog post on April 27 was incorrect. In that blog post, and in a technical note sent to data protection authorities the same day, we said that while Google did collect publicly broadcast SSID information (the WiFi network name) and MAC addresses (the unique number given to a device like a WiFi router) using Street View cars, we did not collect payload data (information sent over the network).

Apple Shows the Success of Sticker Marketing

My mother received an iPad from the family on Mother’s Day and when she opened the box I noticed there was no user manual but there was an Apple sticker. How amazing I thought that customers are accepting of being marketing vehicles for a company – and in this case accept getting a sticker instead of instructions – or headphones for that matter. This week I had my MIS team get me a Griffin Technology PowerBlock Wall Charger for the iPad as I read it was the fastest way to charge the device

CO Lt Governorship up for grabs

In regard to the responses his ad has generated so far, he resists breaking down percentages by serious inquiries versus goofs. “That’s a judgment call, right?” he asks, laughing. But he’s been impressed with the quality of quite a few contacts — although, thus far, the best of the batch are folks who weren’t listed as independents prior to the aforementioned deadline.
