Transparent Algebra: First Week

So my Algebra blogging has been taking up what little “extra” blogging time I have, but here’s the summary of the first week of Algebra: I’m rusty. So far I’ve over-planned (or underestimated the amount of time things take, depending on your perspective) every day. I guess the good news is that I don’t think I’ve done any irreparable harm to my students

SEBI nay change Retail Investor’s Definition

Image via Wikipedia The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) is planning to enhance the maximum investment limit for retail individual investors in public issues from Rs 1,00,000 to Rs 2,00,000. In a discussion paper floated by the market regulator, SEBI has argued that “retail individual investors, who have the capacity and appetite to apply for securities worth above Rs 1,00,000 were constrained from doing so because of the Rs 1,00,000 limit.” The discussion paper also contends that since 35 per cent of the public issue is to be allocated to retail investors, in case of large public issues – with issue size in the range of Rs 4,000-6,000 crore — the limit of Rs 1,00,000 would mean that the issue has to receive a minimum of 1,50,000 to 2,00,000 applications from retail category. “This could be a daunting task considering that in case of well oversubscribed issues, the number of applications received from Retail Individual.

Apple’s popular iPhone has been bringing a lot of subscribers to AT&T in the U.S., but it seems the carrier is having trouble keeping them. A new survey by Morpace suggested that nearly half of AT&T’s current iPhone users might switch to other carriers once AT&T loses its exclusive deal.

“Family Friendly” eBay classifieds

An interesting Facebook page recently came to our attention, dedicated to the proposition that one can literally “stop human trafficking” by using eBay’s “family friendly” classifieds instead of craigslist . eBay touts the advanced filtering technologies eBay employs to “make sure all of our categories and content are family-friendly,” technologies it no doubt applies to the “broader eBay Classifieds family including Gumtree, Marktplaats, Mobile.de and Loquo, which extends the reach of eBay Classifieds to more than 20 countries.” As a practical example of eBay’s “advanced filtering” and “family friendly” classifieds, we’ve been shown some ads currently live on eBay’s Loquo.com classifieds site, which features thousands of paid ads offering various sexual acts in exchange for money (NSFW).

Facts about our network neutrality policy proposal

Posted by Richard Whitt, Washington Telecom and Media Counsel Over the past few days there’s been a lot of discussion surrounding our announcement of a policy proposal on network neutrality we put together with Verizon. On balance, we believe this proposal represents real progress on what has become a very contentious issue, and we think it could help move the network neutrality debate forward constructively. We don’t expect everyone to agree with every aspect of our proposal, but there has been a number of inaccuracies about it, and we do want to separate fact from fiction.

Summer calling cards

If you looked toward the Santa Ana Mountains Monday, they might have appeared hazy and indistinct — the result not of smog or wildfire, but of a thick marine layer that some feel has lingered far too long. “Typically, we have a maritime layer of some type out there,” said meteorologist Mark Moede of the National Weather Service. “It’s just that in August, it starts to convert a little shallower than it has been this August.” calling cards The reason

GSM Hack Fakes Base Station, Records Mobile Calls

Samsung Cetus Leaked as Windows Phone 7 Device

Following the earlier news that Windows Phone 7 could be launching in Europe in October and the USA in November, we’ve been treated to a leak of a new Samsung phone running the Microsoft operating system. Named the Cetus, it appeared on the Bluetooth Special Interest Group website, albeit briefly. However, the moments that it did hang around was enough for the specification to be noted, so here is the proposed feature list for one of the first Samsing phones to use Windows Phone 7: A 4″, 800

Europe to See Windows Phone 7 First?

It has been a long wait to hear exactly when Microsoft will bring Windows Phone 7 to market and although we still don’t have an exact date, this is closer than we’ve been yet to that elusive day and date. Microsoft’s Chief Operating Officer Kevin Turner, who took to the stage at the Worldwide Partner Conference a short while ago, addressed Microsoft’s future in the smartphone arena, saying: October likely across Europe and November likely across US, we’re back in this game! Who would have expected Europe to be the first to see Windows Phone 7 in the shops?  Very few people we would imagine, as most would have laid money on a day/date launch across several countries at the same time

Math Monday: The twisted torus

By George Hart for the Museum of Mathematics A twisted torus is a donut which twists as it closes on itself. It is a visually engaging mathematical design used by many artists through the ages. The origins of the idea are unknown, but below is a woodcut, published by the German graphic artist Johannes Lencker in 1567, which shows that the idea has been around for a long time.

How-To: Cast your own miniatures from a master model

I’ll admit to having wargame minis on the brain this morning. As a commenter on my earlier post pointed out, a cheaper alternative to Shapeways printing of your entire computer-modeled miniature army is to print just one of each unit type, then use the print as a master to make your own mold and cast a bunch of duplicates.
