Perform a Free Cell Phone Number Lookup

It is amazing and somewhat unsettling why you type in your own number and you suddenly see all this information about yourself that is available to everyone. I’m still not used to that. It definitely brings up the notion of “how protective am I with my personal information?”

Tracing Ties – HTC and Google

It comes as to no surprise to many people that HTC will be releasing the Nexus One Google phone. After all, it was HTC that released the very first Android phone, the HTC Dream. But before the Taiwanese company was ever a part of Google’s grand scheme to conquer the mobile phone industry, HTC was originally focusing on developing devices using Microsoft’s Windows Mobile operating system; and prior to that, the company had its own local hurdles to face.

Firefox gets a visit from the future

Thanks to a teenage Firefox aficionado from Tasmania, Australia, you can make your Firefox 3.5 or 3.6 look like mock-ups we’ve seen for Firefox 3.7 and Firefox 4.0. Tabs on top, ‘faviconized’ tabs, a new progress meter (in green), a stop-or-refresh button at the end of the URL bar, and a more Windows 7-friendly look are all part of the Strata40 theme

Google has decided to stop censoring search results in China, after discovering that someone based in that country had attempted to hack into the e-mail accounts of human rights activists. The company disclosed the move in a startling announcement posted to its blog late Tuesday. Google said it was prepared to pull its business out of China, if issues around the surveillance and its decision to stop censoring results could not be resolved with the Chinese government.

U.S. Courts Split on Internet Bans

A federal appeals court is reversing a lifetime internet ban imposed on a child sex offender also handed a 15-year prison term. The outcome highlights the appellate courts are all over the map when it comes to internet bans often imposed on defendants, especially sex deviants, once they have served their time. What’s more, the courts appear to be accepting the internet as a basic freedom to which convicts, even the worst of the worst, usually should not be denied permanent access.

Real-life "landspeeder" prototype

The Many Facets of Cost Savings

Most carriers are now delivering multiple types of services and applications for customers, or if not now, have plans to do so shortly, and the vast majority of these services are being delivered over IP. Many of these services, such as IPTV or videoconferencing, have bandwidth needs that are much more intensive than that of voice, so that the IP transport networks are increasingly dwarfing TDM infrastructure. Size has further advantages for the IP marketplace

Fordongianus: Roman Thermal Baths in the Heart of Sardinia

Sardinia is crossed from Cagliari (the regional capital) to Nuoro (one of the main cities) by the highway 131, and in its very heart, just after the detour to Nuoro, is Fordongianus, laid out on the wide plain of the Campidano Oristanese, where prehistoric remains blend harmoniously with the vestiges left by the Roman presence.

Fixes in for Windows 2000, Adobe Reader

Microsoft patched a critical hole in Windows 2000 on Tuesday that could allow an attacker to take control of a computer if a user viewed a maliciously crafted Embedded OpenType font in Internet Explorer, Office PowerPoint, or Word. The security bulletin is rated “low” severity for Windows 7, Vista, XP, Server 2003, and Server 2008 operating systems, according to the Microsoft advisory , which gave credit for discovering the vulnerability to a Google researcher. According to Microsoft’s Exploitability Index, the hole is rated “2″ which means “inconsistent exploit code likely” while “exploitation of systems running Windows XP and later operating systems is unlikely.” More technical details are available on Microsoft’s Security Research and Defense blog

Google’s Energy Ambitions and Smart Grid Implications

As I research Google’s move into energy, I become fascinated by the idea that Google’s influence on our lives may just be beginning. Sure the Google Toilet ( video ) may not be a real product but analysis of Google’s potential in the smart grid market, coupled with the company’s Android operating system leads at least one analyst, Jon Arnold to see a bright future of collaboration between smart devices in the home and the electrical grid

Extending analog phone line over IP

Complete noob question: I need to extend a single analog phone line over an IP link to an IVR device. What devices can I use to do this? Can I get two devices like the Linksys SPA2102, plug one in to the telco’s phone line and in to my IP network, and have the other one bridge that connection to the IVR device?

German ‘Fleshmob’ Protests Airport Scanners

The underwear bomber’s Christmas Day attack has prompted calls for the increased use of full-body scanners at airports that would strip-search passengers down to their naked bodies. So to protest the use of the so-called Nacktscanner (naked scanner), members of the Pirate Party in Germany organized a “fleshmob” of people who stripped down to their skivvies last Sunday and converged on the Berlin-Tegel airport. They posted a video of their protest to YouTube, with soundtrack provided by Muse’s song “Uprising.” The lyrics articulated their protest: “They will not force us.

A Quick Look at Sony Ericsson’s 2010 Lineup

The Japanese-Swedish joint venture is well known for its high-end and stylish devices, heavy marketing campaigns and ambitious innovations. Right now, the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 is one of the most anticipated devices of 2010 as it promises to deliver the very first 1GHz Snapdragon Android mobile phone to the market; technically the Acer Liquid is the first Snapdragon Android phone, but it is under clocked at a speed far below 1GHz. Aside from the X10, the company has several other amazing mobile phones set to be launched.
