How Ping could morph into a new wave of social services from Apple

Apple’s latest wave of new iPods and a re-iteration of Apple TV are ‘cool’ from a consumer’s perspective (ok, maybe not the new Apple TV which is once again a half-hearted product), but its movement into the social media space with Ping, a music focused social networking service, has the potential to impact the media market in a vastly different way. Analyst firm Frost and Sullivan makes that point in a research note today. It says Ping probably won’t affect Facebook but may affect MySpace, which has a heavy music focus and is already on the ropes

There’s a hands-on and a wry smile from Carey McGregor (Senior Product Manager at Samsung) when BBC reporter Rory Cellan-Jones states, “It looks lovely, but it looks just like a shrunken iPad though”. The Folio 100, from Toshiba, is also shown and comes with Android 2.2, Flash 10.1 support and a miniHDMI port

‘Evil’ Eric Schmidt Debuts in Video Targeting Google Privacy

A creepy caricature of Google CEO Eric Schmidt drives an ice cream truck in this video produced by a consumer group targeting the search giant for its data collection practices. The video is part of a lobbying effort by Consumer Watchdog to get the government to create a so-called “Do Not Track Me” list “to prevent online companies from gathering our personal information , just as Congress had the Federal Trade Commission create a Do Not Call list to prevent intrusive telemarketers.” The group says they’ve paid to have a version of the video shown 36 times per day on a jumbotron in Times Square. It’s not the first anti-Google antic from the group, which is largely funded by legal fees, the Rose Foundation, Streisand Foundation, Tides Foundation and others.

This handy gadget has a slew of communications, social networking and calendar features as well but for now, I just want to see the pandas.

Review: iSSH for the iPad/iPhone

If you’re running an online business like I am, there are times when you need to connect and log in to the server to tweak or check things. It can’t be helped and while the Cpanel solution and related are often splendid, sometimes I just like to get bits all over my hands as I “go old school” on my server and use a command line.
