Digitization To Come At A Price For Consumers?
The first session at the Conference on Digital Media by CII focused on monetizing digital opportunities for broadcasters and movie studios in the highly competitive broadcasting space. Advertisement management, broadcast management technologies, air time sales, with the help of IT and upcoming technologies will be used for protecting the content and restricting piracy. But will this monetizing by the industry on a whole result in the consumer emptying his wallet?

WikiLeaks , the Sweden-based organisation that publishes anonymous leaks of secret material (most recently 90,000 documents about the War in Afghanistan) has until now, relied on donations to fund its activities. That’s lead to outages when funds became scarce, for whatever reason.

I’m here at the MAKE magazine booth at Maker Faire Detroit, and across from us is the Learn to Solder area, run and manned by Mitch Altman and Jimmie Rodgers. Mitch has brought tears to my eyes with his passion and enthusiasm for teaching folks to solder. I’ve witnessed him patiently and joyfully teaching people from 5 to 85 years old

Creative weirdness at Maker Faire
Sashimi Tabernacle Choir. From Dave Hogg’s Flickr feed Twitpic image from today, spotted on @jonrjohnston’s Twitter feed One of the things I love about Maker Faire (and MAKE and Make: Television and everything else we do) is the relative mainstreaming we offer to creative weirdness. There’s always an element of fringe creativity and over-the-top whimsical invention at the Faires, makers who don’t paint inside recognizable lines — they march to their own drummer ’cause they are their own drummer — and they made the drum (and it’s unlike any you’ve ever seen or heard).

Goa to strengthen ties with diaspora
Goa is following in the footsteps of Kerala to engage with its non-residents who make up at least one-third of the state’s 1.5 million population and contribute substantially to the Goan economy. Eduardo Faleiro, Goa commissioner for Non-Resident Indians (NRIs), who is the man behind the efforts, hopes the efforts will best serve the interests of the state. Faleiro said he is happy with the ‘positive’ response from Non-Resident Goans (NRGs) to the work and study his office has done and for the cooperation from the Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs (MOIA). ‘The response is very positive. And what the MOIA is doing for the diaspora and NRIs is a matter to be appreciated, the way they have reached out and how it is well received,’ Faleiro, a former union minister, told IANS during a visit to the capital. His office will interact with overseas Goans on a sustained basis to identify areas of mutual concern, address the needs of Goans overseas by providing an institutional platform and formulating appropriate policies and also strengthen the bond between Goa and the overseas Goans by recognising their achievements

This is the first NIT to be set up in the first year of being allotted to us by the Centre,” Chief minister Digambar Kamat said while inaugurating the institute at the Goa Engineering College (GEC) campus in Farmagudi on Saturday.
